These stunning vines feature leaves shaped exactly like tiny dolphins leaping from the waves! They are a carefree succulent, but even dolphins need the right waters to thrive.
Dolphins love bright, open conditions—just not the scorching midday heat.
The Sweet Spot: Place your dolphins in a spot that gets bright, indirect light for most of the day. A south or west-facing window is ideal, but they need protection from the harsh, direct summer sun that can cause sunburn.
A Tell-Tale Sign: If the strings start to stretch out with large gaps between the leaves, they're signaling they need more light!
Like all succulents, these dolphins store water in their bodies, making them highly susceptible to overwatering.
The Golden Rule: Use the "Wrinkle Test." Wait until the soil is completely dry, and the dolphin leaves themselves look a little less plump or slightly wrinkled. This means they are truly thirsty.
The Soak: When you water, give them a deep, thorough drink until water flows out of the drainage hole, then let the soil dry out completely again before the next watering cycle. Never let them sit in standing water.
Winter Rest: During the cool winter months, reduce watering significantly—sometimes only once a month.
The key to preventing root rot and keeping your dolphins healthy is a fast escape route for excess water.
The Foundation: Use a specialized Cactus and Succulent Soil Mix. You can lighten it even more by adding perlite or pumice to ensure maximum drainage.
The Vessel: A Terracotta pot is an excellent choice, as its porous nature helps draw moisture out of the soil.
Since they are a cross between String of Pearls and Hot Dog Cactus, they enjoy warm, stable conditions.
The Zone: Keep them in temperatures between 65–80F (18-27C).
Avoid: Keep them away from cold drafts, A/C vents, or freezing windows, as these rapid temperature changes can cause leaf drop.
